Before You Move Abroad: 5 Things You Need to Get Real About

Moving abroad isn’t just about packing your bags and booking a flight. If you’re a mom like me, especially doing it solo or with your little one, there are layers to this journey that the highlight reels don’t show.

Here are five things you absolutely need to be real about before making the move — no fluff, just facts from someone who’s already done it.

1. You’re Not Just Moving — You’re Rebuilding

New country, new systems, new normal. Every single part of your life (banking, SIM cards, school runs, groceries, health care) will require learning and adjustment. Be honest about how flexible and resourceful you’re willing to be.

2. Google Won’t Have All the Answers

Trust me, Google can only take you so far. What works for a digital nomad might not work for a mom traveling with a school-age child. What looks cute on TikTok might be a logistical nightmare in real life.

3. Your Mindset Will Make or Break You

There will be days where you second guess everything. That’s normal. But if you’re not already grounded in why you’re doing this — it’ll shake you. Get clear now.

4. Every Country Has Trade-Offs

Cheap rent? Might mean dealing with heat and humidity or lack of hot water in the kitchen. Great school options? Might come at a higher price. There is no “perfect” — only what aligns with your priorities.

5. Your Support System Will Shift

Friends and family won’t always understand. You’ll need new circles — virtually and in real life — to stay sane. Finding people who get it makes all the difference. That’s why I built A Girl and a Carry-On.

💡 Bonus: Let’s Map It Out Together

This journey doesn’t have to be overwhelming. I help women just like you map out custom relocation strategies that actually make sense — from budget planning to choosing the right country to understanding dependent visa options.
